As we write this, our time for returning to Kenya is almost upon us. As was stated in our last blogs, because of the elections in Kenya, we were coming home out of an abundance of caution. In past elections, there has been violence and so we, along with Fr. David, left Kenya. When asked if Fr. David also came back to America, we would say that he went to Malta but would always have to add that it was the island of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea and not Malta, Montana! The elections were held on August 9th and it was not until the following week that the results were announced with Mr. Ruto being declared the winner in a very close election. His challenger, Mr. Odinga, denounced the results and appealed to the Supreme Court of Kenya. The Supreme Court heard arguments from both sides and on September 5th, the Court upheld the results and on Tuesday, September 13th, Mr. Ruto was sworn in as the President of Kenya. We were scheduled to return on August 23 but due to the appeal, awaiting the Supreme Court’s verdict, and finally getting a flight back to Kenya that worked with Fr. David’s schedule, we are scheduled to fly back on September 17. We have been asked numerous times if we feel safe going back and we do especially since we live in the “bush”. Will it be hard to return? Of course, it will be hard. Whether we came home for a week or a month it would still be hard. We are very grateful that we have been given this time to spend with friends and family, especially our sons, but it will be hard to say good-bye again…Kenya is very far away. But we also know that upon our return, we will get back to the working with the orphans and doing the work of the Mission. Also, with the new shamba we will be busier than ever. For those unaware of the new shamba and the building that is taking place, the September edition of the Dakota Catholic Action has an article on this new undertaking and one that we are excited to be a part of. Here is the link to the article should one want to know more: https://files.ecatholic.com/2950/documents/2022/8/September22DCA.pdf We plan to go back to weekly blogs upon our return to Kenya but it may take a week or so to get back on track! In the meantime, please keep us in your prayers as we travel and return to the Mission and know that we will continue to keep you in ours. Mungu Akubariki!
